The 5 Best Hairstyles for Men in Spring 2016

It’s the time of year when we all start itching for a change. It so often begins with our appearance. (Maybe because you realize you weren’t as successful with your New Year’s resolutions once you’re able to lose the layers.) You can spring clean your diet, get a new wardrobe, and even clean up your apartment, but one of the easiest changes you can make is getting a new haircut. Ahead, we highlight the top five trends as worn by celebrities. Plus, John Rivera, Master Barber for The Art Of Shaving, provides tips for how to achieve each cut, and better yet, what to say to your barber to increase your chances of getting exactly what you want.

The 50’s Slicked

Gone are the days of that high slicked back pompadour. Guys, like Leonardo DiCaprio, are going back to a simpler time by keeping it high shine, but taking it low profile. What do I ask my Barber?
Ask the barber at what length your hair should be in order for it to go back and stay that way. See if the barber can taper the temple and back of the neck, graduating from either the skin or near it. That should blend into long hair around the sides and crown. How do I get it to look like this at home?
Use a product that has a high shine and that has the strength you want to keep the hair slicked down (see product recommendation on the next slide). After a shower is the best time to style your hair, to look like you left the barber, use a hairdryer. How often do I need to come back and cut to maintain this style?
Once a month.SEE ALSO: 9 Ripped Action Roles that Need to Be Revived

The Unpredictable Pompadour

This is another new-and-improved iteration of the classic pompadour. For guys that are into more volume than the 50’s slick gives you, like Matt Bomer above, this style achieves the height, and won’t come out flat. What do I ask my Barber?
Ask the barber for finger length on the side into long hair with a little disconnection to leave it looking like a casual pomp. How do I get it to look like this at home?
You will need something that is flexible but still has nice hold (see product recommendation on the next slide). You want to still be able to play with it whenever you run your fingers through while maintaining a nice shape. This can be applied in both wet and dry hair. How often do I need to come back and cut to maintain this style?
Once every 3-4 weeks.SEE ALSO: The Top 10 Movies Every Bodybuilder Should See

The Non-Regulation Military

For the normal civilian, and of course Tom Hardy above, the high-and-tight style of the armed forces can be a little more relaxed. What do I ask my Barber?
Ask if the barber can cut the sides and back with a short blade (from 0-1/12) up to the crown and to blend it into a scissor length that has texture, leaving and inch or two left. How do I get it to look like this at home?
Use a puddy with a matte strong hold (see product recommendation on the next slide). This should be applied to dry hair. Moving the hair in the direction you want it to stay in or mess it up for some texture. How often do I need to come back and cut to maintain this style?
1-3 weeks to keep the sides short.SEE ALSO: Bane Workout: The Insane Bane Training Program

The No Fuss All Muss

Pretty classic and low maintenance, this style will linger season after season. There is a version that works for most guys, including Chris Hemsworth above, which makes it easy to avoid messing up.What do I ask my Barber?
Ask if the barber can do a scissor cut where the sides and back are relatively the same length all around, leaving an inch and a half to two inches all around. Ask for the barber to point cut for added texture making it easier for a messy look. How do I get it to look like this at home?
Using a good matte paste will give you the mussed up look (see product recommendation on the next slide). Apply it to wet or dry hair and simply style. How often do I need to come back and cut to maintain this style?
Once every 4-6 weeks.SEE ALSO: Chris Hemsworth’s God-Like Thor Workout

The Shaggy Surfer

You don’t have to go short just because the weather is getting warmer. Just own your style, like Christian Bale does above, and make it look like you’re making your way to the beach—every day. What do I ask my Barber?
Ask for a layered scissor cut, leaving a lot of length. Tell him to add texture along the top and crown.   How do I get it to look like this at home?
Use something with a salt or a grit because this should be fast and simple and should give the hair a look as if you were out swimming in the ocean. (See product recommendation on the next slide.)How often do I need to come back and cut to maintain this style?
This style takes some time to grow out, so wait 4-7 weeks before returning to the shop.
